How excited the women of this area are about this initiative, it is told by the words of Kamala Devi of ‘Parsari’. She says- ‘Rose cultivation has mixed the fragrance of roses in our lives. We are getting huge profits from this and due to this our financial condition has improved. It is a matter of pride for us that Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has appreciated the rose oil prepared by the women farmers of Joshimath.

It is noteworthy that in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand with heterogeneous geography, farming has been limited due to various reasons including migration of people, weather, wildlife. In such a situation, there was a discussion about whether farming should remain a profitable deal for the people of remote areas. For this, the option of aromatic cultivation was chosen and this responsibility was assigned to the ‘Aromatic Plant Center’, CAP in Joshimath area of Chamoli. CAP selected Noorjahan, Chawala and Himrose varieties of damask roses according to the geography of the region and in 2005 took the initiative to start cultivation on rams as a boundary crop. For this the women of the area were encouraged.

Let us tell you that first of all rose plants were planted as a boundary crop in Premnagar-Parasari and Merang villages of Joshimath in frontier Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. After two years flowers started coming on the plants and then the women farmers started preparing rose water from it. Gradually women from other villages also joined this initiative. Today Joshimath has developed as a cluster for Damask Rose and 90 people from 12 villages including Parasari, Ganeshpur, Merang, Raini, Saldhar, Auli, Sunil, Badagaon, Karchi, Tapovan, Dwing are involved in rose cultivation. Out of which 54 are women.
