The outer mandis dashed the hopes of the farmers:
According to local farmers, after many years the production of apples has increased to about one crore boxes. But apple prices have fallen in other markets including Delhi. Due to which the fruits of hard work are not being received.
Farmers told that for the last one decade apple cultivation was affected due to bad weather and untimely snowfall. The weather was favorable this year due to which there was a bumper production of apples in district Kullu. Compared to the year 2018, 75 lakh boxes of apples have been produced this time instead of 35 lakh.
Significantly, due to bumper production, apples are being sold at throwaway prices even in local areas. In the rural areas, the situation is so bad that it has become difficult for the gardeners to even find buyers.
Farmers appealed to the government:
Local farmers said that we worked hard and produced a bumper crop of apples. But due to government policies, the rates of apples have fallen in the mandis of the country including Delhi, due to which we are suffering huge losses. Selling apples in local mandis is also a loss making deal. The government should pay attention to this.
