Due to increasing urbanization day by day the pressure on arable land is increasing as multi-storeyed buildings and industrial units are being established at an increasing pace. Due to these types of activities, the greenery is decreasing and concrete jungles have taken the place of this greenery. For this reason, a new calamity has come in the cities which is called the “Urban Heat Island” effect. Which is increasing day by day due to which the temperature of the constructed buildings remains hotter than the environment around it.
Rooftop gardening is also called “terrace gardening” or “roof top gardening”. This type of gardening also has an important role in energy conservation because by doing this type of gardening, the temperature inside the buildings remains low and thus AC or cooler has to be run less. Apart from this, traditionally the sky and the roof are beautified by this. It also has an important role in stopping rain water and slowing down the flow of water.
Today, in the race of urbanization, gardens are disappearing from the society and the cost of land is increasing, so there is only one option left for urban people and that is “Terrace Garden”.
Terrace gardening is a good hobby from the health point of view. Obesity and depression are two important diseases in today’s time. Due to which most of the people are getting affected. In such a situation, terrace garden not only keeps a person busy for a few hours throughout the week but also gives a wonderful feeling of being in the lap of nature. Especially to the housewives, it also gives a breath of peace in the midst of daily work and also provides a relieved smile amidst the cultivation of vegetables, flowers and fruits planted by them. Also provides daily household needs such as vegetables, fruits and flowers.
Dream of urban people:- The prices of vegetables always remain high, sometimes due to less rains and sometimes due to excess rains. At the same time, there is always a fear in the minds of health-conscious people that somewhere there is a trace of chemical pesticides in it. I wish it were so that vegetables were planted on the terrace itself and whenever you wanted, you could pluck vegetables, spices etc. and prepare delicious dishes.
There are very few lucky people in big cities who have empty land behind their house to set up a kitchen garden. But most of the people definitely have a roof. In such a situation, urban people can make their dream come true by doing “Terrace Gardening”. But planning for this is absolutely necessary. For this it is very important to take into account various factors like number of persons in the family, total free space available on the terrace etc. Along with this, it is also necessary that those who want to do terrace gardening should make the roof of their house strong while building their house and those whose houses are already built should use light weight items for planting plants.
“A roof that is partially or completely covered with plants and has an irrigation system to water the plants, such gardens are known as Green Roof or Top Roof Garden or Rainy Garden etc.”
By doing this type of gardening, a sense of love for nature can be developed in urban children. Along with this, he can get practical information about the course related to biological science.
Important tricks of terrace gardening:
1- Type of pots: – 24 inch wide bowl shaped pot can be used for planting vegetables in summer. It is very important to have drainage holes at the bottom of the pot.
In the spring, for planting green vegetables, peas, beans, carrots, green cabbage (broccoli) etc. square pots of 6 inch x 48 inch size etc. are appropriate.
When choosing pots, it is absolutely necessary that each pot has a drain pan so that water does not collect on the roof and algae does not build up.
A little space should be left in the middle of the row of two pots so that the grower can come to extract water and grass from it.
Big plastic or iron boxes or big cement pots or big plastic bags can be used for planting big fruit plants.
(a) Green vegetables:- Coriander, spinach, fennel, lettuce
(B) Vine vegetables:- Pumpkin, Taroi, Bitter gourd, Gourd, Cucumber, Cucumber, Melon, Watermelon etc.

Generally, in a residential construction project in which there is maximum space for making a terrace garden, the cost of making a terrace garden comes less than 1 percent of the total construction cost. It takes at least a month to make a terrace garden of about 400 square meters. It takes 2-3 months to plant saplings.
By the year 2030, the population of the people will reach up to 60 percent in the cities. In such a situation, the demand for vegetables will increase further. Therefore, every urban person should do farming on the roof. It doesn’t matter how big or small your terrace is. Lastly, there should be beautiful terrace gardens on all the roofs. The cost is also not much and only two hours are needed daily for gardening. So “Do terrace gardening and enjoy urban life in a rural way”.
