Livestock farmers face the biggest problem of green fodder in summer. Green fodder is available only for three to four months from crops like Barseem, Maize, Jowar. In such a situation, cattle rearers can get green fodder for four to five years by planting Napier grass once.

It doesn’t even require much irrigation. Napier grass, which looks like sugarcane, can grow in just 50 days of planting and can meet the need of nutritious feed for milch animals continuously for the next four to five years.

VK Singh, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry Department, explains about Napier grass, “Napier grass, rich in proteins and vitamins, fulfills the need of an excellent diet for animals. Continuous feeding of this grass to milch animals increases milk production as well as increases disease resistance.

Hybrid Napier root is planted at a distance of three feet. Before this, after plowing and leveling the field, grass is planted and irrigation is done after planting. Grass develops into green fodder just 50 days after planting.

Once the grass has developed, it can be harvested for four to five years and used as animal feed. The production of Napier grass is about 300 to 400 quintals per acre. The specialty of this grass is that it can be planted anywhere.

Once the grass is cut, its branches start spreading again and in 40 days it again becomes fit for feeding animals. Light spraying of urea around the roots of the grass after each cutting also promotes rapid growth. By the way, for its better production, cow dung manure should also be sprinkled.
