Citrus fruits are the best sources of vitamin C, sugars, amino acids and other nutrients. These fruits have special importance because of their energy-giving and medicinal properties in the body. Among these fruit trees, citrus fruits like orange, malta, grapefruit, fruit, lemon and seasonal etc. have an important place. Plant nematodes are very small snake-like creatures and they are not visible to the naked eye. Nematodes mostly live in the soil and attack the roots of plants and take nutrition from the root tissues. The symptoms produced by nematodes are often similar to the symptoms caused by the deficiency of elements, which are not easily identified. Plant growth stops and leaves turn yellow. Plants with broad leaves wilt during day time, flowering, fruit formation, etc. are badly affected.
Talunculus semipenetrans nematode damages all citrus plants like orange, tangerine, malta etc. It is a semi-endoparasitic root eater (some part of the body is inside the root and some outside the root. The larvae that become males become adults without eating anything and they have nothing to do with the disease. While the larvae that become females Larvae feed, feed and grow by partially penetrating the root. The life cycle of the nematode is completed in 6-8 weeks at a favorable temperature (25-30C)
Root and nematode affected root of disease free plants
Symptoms: Due to lack of nutrients and food, the vitality of plants decreases. The leaves of plants affected by nematode turn yellow and start drying. Later on, the twigs also start drying slowly from top to bottom. That’s why it is called slodicline or slow-degradation disease. The head of the fruit on diseased plants appears to be of small size due to which the yield is greatly reduced. In the initial few years, no symptoms of this nematode are visible on the plants. Roots of 7-8 years old plants look small and somewhat thick. Due to the sticking of soil particles, their color is muddy. Heavily affected roots are tender and come off easily.
Prevention:
1. Disease free plants should be selected. Therefore, we should buy plants only from those nurseries which are recognized by the government.
2. Apply Carbofuran (Fyuradan 3G) medicine at the rate of 13 grams per square meter in 9 square meter area around the stems of the plants or neem cake per kg plant and Fyordan medicine mixed in 7 grams per square meter soil and apply sufficient water. Cake and medicine should be used before flowering.
3. Grow garlic, onion and marigold crops in the seeds of plants, which increases income along with nematode control.
4. Use of resistant trifoliate root stock is also a good method.
