This is the specialty of this species
Actually Noorjahan is a common species considered to be of Afghani origin. Noorjahan trees are found in Katthiwada region of Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The fruits of Noorjahan can be up to one feet long. The weight of one of its fruits can be more than 2 kg. The weight of their kernels is between 150 to 200 grams. Due to the limited number of Noorjahan’s fruits, people who are fond of it get their advance booking done at the same time when all these fruits are ripening on the branch of the tree. As their demand increases, the price of one fruit reaches around Rs.500.
Earlier there used to be a mango of 4 kg.
An expert on the cultivation of this species in Katthiwada, about 250 km from Indore, told that this time the weather has been very kind and due to this the trees of Noorjahan have borne a lot of fruits. So we are expecting its better crop. He told that the trees of Noorjahan had started blooming from January and its fruits would be ready by the end of June. The average weight of a fruit is estimated to be around 2.5 kg, in any era its average weight used to be 3.5 to 3.75 grams.
Crisis on this species of mango
During the last decade, due to delayed monsoon rains, scanty rains, excess rains and other fluctuations in the air, the weight of Noorjahan fruits has been continuously decreasing, besides this, due to the effects of climate change, the existence of this rare variety of mangoes has been reduced.
