In the month of January this year, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has released a star-shaped jasmine flower prepared scientifically, as an alternative to the traditional Jathi Malli flower i.e. Jasminum grandiflorum. Which has been named Star Jasmine in the English language. Jathi malli flowers are widely used in rituals performed in temples. Due to which the prices of Jati Malli flowers increase in winter (from November to February). Also, due to the off-season, their availability also decreases. Finding a solution to this problem, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has developed a new variety of jasmine flower. Which can be cultivated throughout the year. Also, its availability remains throughout the year. However, Star Jasmine Jathi looks slightly different from Malli Phool. When this flower blooms, its petals are white. But they are thinner, longer and more spread out than the traditional jasmine flowers.
Where on the one hand, Jathi Malli flowers start drying in 2-3 hours, whereas Star Jasmine does not dry in 4-5 hours as compared to them. TNAU Horticulture Department Head, L. Pugazhendhi told that “after plucking the star jasmine, their copal can be kept in the open at room temperature for 12 hours and in the refrigerator for 60 hours.” The fragrance of Star Jasmine is milder than that of traditional Jasmine. Taking his point forward, L. Pugazhendhi says that “This new variety can be used in place of normal Jathi Malli in flower garlands. Even after use, their fragrance and appearance remain the same as before. Due to its strong stem and long buds It becomes very easy to put it in flower garlands, so it is very economical. This variety of jasmine flower is suitable for all types of red and black soil. Scientists say that Star Jasmine requires less water than Jathi Malli flowers. Can be grown. Also it is not easily affected by drought and famine.
The Head of the Department said that during field trials within the university, the yield of Star Jasmine was recorded at 2.21 kg per plant and an average of 7.41 tonnes per hectare. Which is less than the yield of Jathi Malli flower, about 10.83 tonnes per hectare. But the special thing about Star Jasmine flower is that while the non-availability of Jetha Malli increases in winter, on the other hand Star Jasmine will be available in winter also.
