1. Directly in the ground: Under this method rainwater is discharged directly into the ground water reservoir through a pit.

2. Recharging by making trenches: By this method, in the premises of large institutes, along with the boundary wall, big drains (recharge trenches) are made and the water is lowered into the ground. This water percolates down into the ground and helps in maintaining the balance in the water table.

3. Pumping water into wells: Rainwater is pumped from the roof top of the houses through pipes into the house or a nearby well. In this way, not only the well is recharged, but the water from the well also goes underground. This water raises the ground water level inside the ground.

4. Draining water into tubewells: Rain water is collected on the roof of buildings and discharged directly into tubewells through a pipe. In this, it becomes necessary to install a filter between the pipe connecting the tubewell to the roof. Due to this, the water of the tubewell always remains the same.

5. Tank storage: Apart from recharging the ground water reservoir, rainwater can be stored in the tank to meet our daily needs. With this method, rain water can be used for a long time.

In a rainy season, about one lakh liters of water can be lowered into the ground from the small terrace. For this, first of all, a pit has to be made 3 to 5 feet wide and 5 to 10 feet deep in the ground. Water from the roof is lowered into this pit through a pipe. After digging, coarse stones (pebbles) are put in the bottom of this pit, medium sized stones (cobbles) in the middle and fine sand or gravel at the top. This method is the easiest method to filter water. This system acts as a filter.
